Elias National Park from to , a self-contained mining town with its own hospital, skating rink, tennis court, and dairy. But most of the buildings have now been abandoned for around 60 years, some of which have deteriorated past the point of salvation—but are still quite lovely.

Unfortunately, the waters soon became contaminated and toxic probably because of all that coal and oil , a problem that only got solved after the commercial boom following the Olympics. The area is now a fully-functional residential suburb, but you can still catch a few glimpses of Homebush Bay’s industrial past—and they’re much prettier than you might think.

And its earlier history is relatively similar: A wealthy man, Robert Brinkley Snowden, built the property in for his family and dubbed it Ashlar Hall. They lived there enjoying its eight bedrooms, six bars, five bathrooms, and indoor pool until his death in After about a decade of grueling upkeep, the family decided to turn it into a place of business, operating it as a restaurant. At some point after that, Ashlar Hall and the surrounding land were purchased by investors who built skyrises around it and left it to rot.
But the inside looks completely different today, telling a decidedly less conventional tale. Fast forward to the s, when Robert Hodges, a. This hillside ghost town was founded in the 8th century and sits on a cliff that’s 1, feet off the ground. The city emptied due to various natural disasters. In , many evacuated after a landslide; in , a flood made conditions even more precarious; and in , an earthquake caused the town to be abandoned in its entirety.
