I had a chat with Joe Manier, who created the app. He told me he mostly takes pictures from his drone, and started compiling a list of good locations. He’s had more than 10, downloads, and while most of the abandoned locations are in the U.
Forgotten is is a pretty unique app and photographers should find it useful. Both apps look interesting but require in app purchases to make them fully useable. Neither seem available for Android but there are similar apps for people using that platform. This is cool, and at the same time I’m amused that this article is published at basically the same time as the “don’t publish coordinates of sensitive locations! In some ways I like that, I don’t think that FS has to have a singular editorial position on such, even if we consider these comparable concepts.
I had the same thought but I think there’s a difference of scale here. Hopefully these places won’t see the millions of visitors that the national parks have had to deal with. I’m more concerned about this app enabling trespassing and causing issues for property owners or photographers travelling on posted land and getting in trouble. I’m downloading it and checking it out but people have to remember to be aware of land use laws and courtesy wherever they go.
Yeah, it’s pretty safe to say there’s gong to be some trespassing issues. Just had an article yesterday about the sins of geo tagging and today we condone an ap that does just that. The author says looking for unique places how can they be that if everyone can find it on an app.

A top down look at a building may seem that it is overgrown, but often times it could just be trees casting their branches and leaves over the buildings. It is worth mentioning that on the contrary of large towns, smaller communities have had some of the best locations I have ever been to.
On Google Maps, check out your local rural communities. Often times there are dilapidated barns and old farm houses that can easily be identified from aerial view. Also keep your eyes out for odd shapes and anomalies in nature. For instance, perfect squares, triangles, and circles are uncommon shapes. Finding patterns or shapes could indicate there might have been human activity in that area.
Look closely at the picture below, does anything catch your eye? This is actually a flooded nuclear bunker located in a remote wooded area.
Note the near perfect square shape. You can see where the cave in occurred filling the tunnel and basin with water. Often times these projects were disguised as logging operations or other commercial activity. In rural areas, at least in the United States it is fairly common for families to keep their childhood home on their property and build a new house nearby. I have seen newer homes share property with homes built in the early s completely sealed like a time capsule.
These are personally my favorite finds. But do your homework! I have accidentally walked into hoarders homes, partially active factories, and completely occupied houses before.. I cannot stress this enough. Not having a correct understanding of the dangers and using the correct gear could literally kill you.
A superfund site is an area of land that is contaminated in some way, and deemed an environmental hazard by the EPA. The EPA usually reports the hazards and their plans to clean it up.
Some sites may still be active depending on their severity, and others will be permanently closed. The dangers range, and that is why I cannot stress enough that these places are not to be taken lightly. Not all places are abandoned so it requires some research. A lot of the contamination will be heavy metal and ground water based, but bring proper equipment when entering hazardous areas.

This is honestly a treasure trove of not only information, but history that is often recalled by people who used to work or live in these areas. For instance, I remember finding an old Nike military base in the woods.

For instance, I remember finding an old Nike military base in the woods. I had no idea what it was until I asked a few other explorers. Upon further research I found that nearly every single Nike missile base was listed and categorized online. Everything was documented. When it was opened, when it was closed, what types of missiles were housed there, and sometimes who was even stationed at these bases. Veterans exchanged stories about working at the missile bases during the cold war, describing what is was like to be there at that time.
It was amazing to see how close I was to other bases that were abandoned. Some sites were paved over, while others were converted into homes, or museums.

You can sometimes find entire factories listed for millions of dollars that have just been sitting vacant. Set a Google Alert for a location that you think is going to get demolished or is going out of businesses. Use the search and find what you are more interested in nature or cultural objects, the collection is almost endless.

You could hurt yourself badly enough that it might be difficult to get out of the building. This could occur through falling through floor boarding or getting bitten by a snake.
