Music done by John Williams is also a joy to listen to. Raiders of the Lost Ark was released in and became an instant classic. It included adventure, action, some romance and Nazi Germany. What more could one ask for? Indiana Jones is an archeology professor who is contacted by U. He deduces that they are looking for the Staff of Ra that will lead them to the Ark of the Covenant which was described in the Book of Exodus in the Bible. It contained the two stone tables of the Ten Commandments that God gave to Moses.

The Germans hope to use this ancient artifact in their war effort. Jones accepts the job to find the Ark. That takes him first to Nepal to find Marion, his former lover and the daughter of Professor Ravenwood that worked on ancient Egypt and the staff. That’s the first time Jones tangles with Nazi agents that are looking for the same information.

Then Jones and Marion go to Egypt to find the Ark. Right from the beginning of the movie Spielberg sets out that this will be about adventure as Jones tries to take a golden idol in Peru, only to be upset by a series of booby traps that almost kill him.

Jones barely escapes. This is foreshadowing the adventures that will take place later in the movie as well as the the excitement of the chase for hidden treasure. She also demanded to go with Jones to Egypt as his partner to find the treasure, again showing her determination and self-will. That might have been the inspiration for Lucas and Kaufman. The ending is a great play upon the mix between those two elements: the Nazis and the occult. Overall Raiders of the Lost Ark is a great action adventure movie.

The characters are engaging as well as the story which has plenty of drama to it. What can you say about Raiders of the Lost Ark that hasn’t been said before? It has been analysed, deconstructed, praised and written about at length by everyone from the highest of film critics to the man of the street film lover and his dog. Truth is, is that nothing new can be added to the millions of tomes written about what Spielberg coyly announced was his B movie homage to adventure serials of the 30s and 40s.

It quickly pulled Spielberg out of a depressive rut after the critical mauling of his period comedy movie It announced Harrison Ford as a superstar actor whilst simultaneously introducing pop culture references that still thrive today. It won four Oscars and was nominated for a further four, and as it made archaeology sexy it heralded the opening of a new era for the summer blockbuster. The whole production apart from Spielberg were taken ill whilst filming in Tunisia and it was the start of a franchise that still brings great GREAT pleasures to millions of fans.

Why is Raiders so adored? That it is a film that still entertains royally today, where once loved in is still loved by the very same older and wiser people in the new millennium? It’s packed with outstanding action set-pieces amazing stunt-work , the special effects stunning, the locations are sumptuous, the cinematography gorgeous and Williams’ score stirs the blood and raises the gooseflesh.

The narrative is smooth and appealing in its good versus bad race against time simplicity, yet the pace is frenetic. From the establishment of the kinetic pleasures with its iconic opening section, to the gloriously gruesome finale, it’s breakneck stuff that is by turns intense but played with considerable wit and playfulness.

Casting is also spot on, with Ford leading the way. Ford’s performance as Indiana Jones – part time teacher, part time lovable rogue who lurches from one perilous situation to another – is note perfect. It’s a performance of style and substance that is often wrongly ignored by the stuffy, purely because of the genre of film it sits in. The supporting performances are also outstanding, with Allen’s spunky hard drinking Marion and Freeman’s weasel Nazi stooge Belloq particularly hitting the heights.

While on the other side of the camera and at the writing table, the trio of Spielberg, Kasdan and Lucas prove to be a meeting of classical adventure loving heart and minds, for the film is crafted with humour, energy and skill. It undoubtedly owes a debt to olde Hollywood fare like Gunga Din, Secret of The Incas and Valley of the Kings and more , while some stereotyping of natives exists because the film harks back to olde Hollywood adventure movies!

And undeniably it’s a teeny—tiny bit annoying that as we enter the home straight Allen’s character arc has her shift from tough dame to «save me Indy» fodder, but small complaints be damned. Great actors and acting.

Fun archaeology for all short round is the best. Glove Reviewed in the United States on April 23, The first and I suggest the best of the Indiana Jones movie to date.

If you enjoy action movies with a little humor intertwined you have found your entrainment. Grazidine Reviewed in the United States on May 27, Practical Reviewed in the United States on February 9, I saw this movie in the theatre when it was released and was blown away by the characters and the film art of Spielberg. ET is widely credited as Spielberg’s finest but I believe that Raiders is clearly his best. The movie is exceptionally well written and produced. Casting was brilliant and the editing and production all very well executed.

Raiders is filled with action, relentless action. It is both at times violent and graphic without being either gratuitous or gory. It has a female lead love interest that while mildly romantic is never sexist or exploitive outside of the development of the story. The script contains no profanity. The lost Ark of the covenant containing the stone tablets given to Moses by the Hebrew God which he then brought down. Jones is an archeologist and his interest is purely academic.

The Ark is an object of great power, the bible speaks of it leveling mountains. An army that carries the Ark before it is invincible. Don’t open your eyes Marian, don’t look at it.

When the Ark is recovered and safely in the hands of the United States Government it will be kept in a safe location. What safe location asks Jones? A safe location where it’s secrets will be studied by top people. What top people asks Jones? Top People. In the end the ark is again lost forever. While I have seen it a hundred times, I watched it again the other evening having not seen it in years and found it to be just as entertaining and just as remarkable in the way it was produced.

It is in my opinion the best action adventure film of all time – and one that you can take the kids to see. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Make Money with Us. Amazon Payment Products. Let Us Help You.

She took sedatives prior to the scene to get over her initial fear, and claimed «they definitely worked». Goofs Although they might be consumed in some parts of Southeast Asia, snakes, insects, and monkey brains would never be served in India and especially not in the palace of a Hindu king or «maharaja» due to very strict Hindu and Islamic dietary codes.

In fact, a significant portion of Indians mostly Hindus are strict vegetarians due to those religious dietary restrictions. Quotes Short Round : Wow! Crazy credits The Paramount mountain dissolves into a mountain on a gong.

Kate Capshaw ‘s hands obscure the words ‘starring in’, after which her entire body obscures the «Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom» title. Alternate versions To avoid a ’15’ certificate in the UK with the sacrificial ceremony said to be bordering on ’18’, according to a letter sent by the BBFC to UIP in , the BBFC cut 1 minute 6 secs from the film and later said that it was one of the strongest PG ratings they had ever issued.

Among the cuts made were a heart ripped from a sacrificial victim and his lowering into the blazing pit, edits to a whipping scene and the fight between Indiana and the overseer, and the removal of a shot of a man’s head hitting the side of a cliff. The line «Leave him alone, you bastards» was changed to «Leave him alone» and sounds of screams and violence were also considerably reduced.

This PG rated print was the only version available in the UK for many years until October , when the cuts were fully waived for the 12 rated Blu-Ray release. User reviews Review. Featured review. For a long time, this was the only one of the three Indiana Jones films I did not like. Then, when it was part of the DVD package that came out over five years ago, I had to buy it if I wanted the other two, so I gave it a third look.

Wow, all of sudden I liked it. For the first time, the woman Kate Capshaw and the young boy Ke Huy Quan weren’t as annoying as I had remembered them. The stupid kid really had rubbed me the wrong way, but this time only Kate was annoying The action in this film is mostly at the beginning and at the end.

It is so Rambo-ish bad guys never hit the target but good guys always do it is ludicrous. It became NTV’s most-watched film up until then with a In the United Kingdom, the film’s airing was watched by 5 million viewers on BBC1 , becoming the channel’s ninth most-watched film during the first half of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom received mixed reviews upon its release, [7] but over the years the film’s reception has shifted to a more positive tone.

The site’s critical consensus reads, «It may be too ‘dark’ for some, but Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom remains an ingenious adventure spectacle that showcases one of Hollywood’s finest filmmaking teams in vintage form.

Roger Ebert gave the film a perfect four-star rating, calling it «the most cheerfully exciting, bizarre, goofy, romantic adventure movie since Raiders , and it is high praise to say that it’s not so much a sequel as an equal. It’s quite an experience. Old-time, part movie serials didn’t have shape. They just went on and on and on, which is what Temple of Doom does with humor and technical invention.

In some ways it was less. In sum total, I’d have to say I enjoyed it more. That doesn’t mean it’s better necessarily, but I got more enjoyment out of it. Dave Kehr stated «The film betrays no human impulse higher than that of a ten-year-old boy trying to gross out his baby sister by dangling a dead worm in her face.

No parent should allow a young child to see this traumatizing movie; it would be a cinematic form of child abuse.

Even Harrison Ford is required to slap Quan and abuse Capshaw. There are no heroes connected with the film, only two villains; their names are Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

Colin Greenland reviewed Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom for Imagine magazine, and stated that » Raiders had the wit and lightness of touch not to take itself too seriously. Temple starts well, but promptly loses itself In clamorous self-importance. I couldn’t care less if it outgrosses Raiders. It grossed me out. The character of Willie Scott has been criticized for her constant screaming and frequent need to be rescued. Kate Capshaw called Willie «not much more than a dumb screaming blonde.

It was too dark, too subterranean, and much too horrific. I thought it out-poltered Poltergeist. There’s not an ounce of my own personal feeling in Temple of Doom. Lucas, who had divorced from Marcia Lucas , attributed the film’s darkness to his relationship problems, but in regards to the film said, «I love the movie, it’s just slightly darker in tone and not as fun as the first.

In , Time Out polled several film critics, directors, actors and stunt actors to list their top action films. The depiction of Indian culture caused controversy and brought it to the attention of India’s censors, who placed a temporary ban on it as it did not open in theaters. The film was later released when it came out on home video.

Shashi Tharoor and Yvette Rosser have criticized the film for its portrayal of India, with Rosser writing «[it] seems to have been taken as a valid portrayal of India by many teachers, since a large number of students surveyed complained that teachers referred to the eating of monkey brains.

Roshan Seth , who played Chattar Lal, mentioned that the banquet scene was a joke that went wrong, saying, «Steven intended it as a joke, the joke being that Indians were so smart that they knew all Westerners think that Indians eat cockroaches, so they served them what they expected. The joke was too subtle for that film. In his autobiography, Amrish Puri expressed the whole controversy around the film was «silly».

He wrote that «it’s based on an ancient cult that existed in India and was recreated like a fantasy. If you recall those imaginary places like Pankot Palace, starting with Shanghai, where the plane breaks down and the passengers use a raft to jump over it, slide down a hill and reach India, can this ever happen?

But fantasies are fantasies, like our Panchatantra and folklore. I know we are sensitive about our cultural identity, but we do this to ourselves in our own films.

It’s only when some foreign directors do it that we start cribbing. In response to some of the more violent sequences in the film, and with similar complaints about Gremlins , Spielberg suggested that the Motion Picture Association of America MPAA alter its rating system by introducing an intermediary between the PG and R ratings. The United Kingdom followed suit 5 years later, with the BBFC introducing the «12» rating and Batman being the first film to receive it.
